ANTONBLAST, stylized in all caps, is a 2D platformer developed by Summitsphere. It is a spiritual successor to the Wario Land series of games, featuring action-packed gameplay similar to Wario Land 4, as well as Metroid Dread, Cuphead, Crash Bandicoot, Shovel Knight and Sonic CD. It also includes a unique, over-exaggerated art style reminiscent of 90's cartoons, and a just-as-unique 16-bit soundtrack.

Plot[]

In the depths of Hell, Satan asks his magic mirror if he is the reddest. The mirror does say he is, but also states that there is someone else who could be the reddest. Satan asks who could possibly be so red as to outshine him. The mirror admits that it's a red guy, infuriating Satan as he demands to know who he is. The mirror reveals that the identity of the red guy is Dynamite Anton, a demolitionist who lives in Boiler City. Out of both wrath and envy of Anton's extremely red skin, Satan sends his army of Ballbusters to find Anton, discover what he cherishes the most, and steal it while he is asleep. He plots to have Anton furious enough to chase after Satan so that his redness can be sapped, making Satan the reddest being on (and/or in) the planet.

As expected, Anton's house is broken into by a bunch of Ballbusters, who steal his spirits. Furious, Anton sets out to reclaim his stolen liquor, aided by his roommate Dynamite Annie, who comes along purely to cause destruction. In another corner of Boiler City, casino manager Brulo has his own beef with Satan, and agrees to lift Anton's lifetime ban from his establishment in exchange of ridding it of Satan's workers.

When Anton finally reaches Satan's keep, the Devil begins to siphon Anton's red tone, gaining all of the redness and all of the power as he becomes Giga Satan; with Anton completely powerless, Giga Satan flings him to decay. Just then, the spirits give Anton enough power to give him the beating of a lifetime.

After being pummeled, Satan begins to whine about losing his castle, his mirror, and, worst of all, his redness, before proceeding to bawl like a crybaby. He begins to consider doing something more productive until noticing the duo. He ultimately decides to retaliate by whipping out his patented "Satan Switch" and using it to destroy Hell and, by extension, Earth, declaring that if he can't be the reddest thing on the planet, then no one can. Satan activates the switch and bids Anton farewell. Anton and Annie are sent back to Boiler City where Anton crashes into a car and Annie into a dumpster. Brulo congratulates Anton on having defeated Satan, but Anton dashes out of the scene, knowing that he and Annie will end up getting vaporized in the blast. Brulo wonders why he's making a hasty exit as the Satan Switch begins to take effect, as Brulo realizes too late and Boiler City gets vaporized completely alongside Cinnamon Springs and Pinball Mire. Meanwhile Danton, a construction worker hired by Brulo to fix everything, finally celebrates that he fixed everything, as his cynical wife Nina watches, only for it to be all for nothing when the Satan Switch explosion ruins everything, vaporizing them and the whole world - except for Anton and Annie's apartment. The pair celebrate their victory with a drink, acting like the world isn't destroyed, as it shows Boiler City now in complete rubble. We then get an epilogue showing where the characters are now:

  • Knowing that he doesn't have to worry about Satan anymore, Anton can live peacefully with his Spirits.
  • Annie goes back to living with Anton as she has nowhere else to go and any mail from her parents is boiled and eaten by her.
  • Brulo files an insurance claim for his casino after it is left in ruins and is now trying to get his wife back, though he hasn't succeeded yet.
  • Danton and Nina retire from the construction business to start a marriage counselling firm.
  • Satan's fate is unknown as no one has bothered looking for him, but as the old saying goes... the Devil's in the details.

Gameplay[]

In ANTONBLAST, the player can play as Anton or Annie. Dynamite Anton himself uses the Mighty F'n Hammer while Dynamite Annie uses her Massive G'Dmn Mace to attack enemies, destroy objects or jump higher. By causing destruction in regular levels, you can get Chips and make your combo higher.

The objective in regular levels is to find detonators in order to reach the Spirit Timer, which will activate Happy Hour, causing several parts of the level to change and Brulo Blocks to become passable. During this state, the player has to run back to Brulo's elevator before the clock runs out, otherwise everything will catch up on fire, resulting in a Bad Luck!

There are also Collectables scattered within level, like Junk, Cassettes, Spray Cans and the stolen Spirits.

Completing a level will unlock more stages inside Brulo's Casino, which serves as a lobby where you can enter regular levels or boss battles. Besides that, you can visit Brulo's Shop to purchase various items using chips collected throughout the levels. The shop offers items, like pets that will help you collect chips, along with Toys, Health upgrades and more.

In boss levels, you have to beat the boss by hitting them with your hammer while avoiding their attacks.

The game has been in development for over 2 years and released multiple demos over the years, some of them were available only during events like PAX WEST and Mix Seattle.

ANTONBLAST has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, according to the game's Steam reviews.

Trivia[]

  • The boost combo mechanic was inspired in Crash Nitro Kart's boost counter mechanic.[1]
  • ANTONBLAST was nominated for Gamemaker Awards and won the 'Most Anticipated Game' award.[2]
  • According to Summitsphere itself on the steam page, ANTONBLAST is the best game they have made so far.
  • Antonblast had two delays. It was originally going to release on October 2023[3], but the devs decided to delay the game to 2024 in order to polish the game, Then it was going to release on November 12th 2024, but due to two Hurricane's named Helene and Milton impacting Florida, it was delayed once again to December 3rd 2024.[4]
  • Before release, two users, one named Zhain, uploaded a video of the whole game, and the other named NeatPick, uploaded a video of all bosses. This has caused a massive outcry and uproar in the Summitsphere Discord. Thankfully, both of the videos were taken down.
  • ANTONBLAST was once the 401st most wishlisted game on Steam.[5]
  • As of March 13th 2025 ANTONBLAST has won GOTY's Audience Pick in the DIGY Awards
